Trying something new can feel exciting, and a little intimidating. Plenty of people walk into their first class feeling a little unsure: Will I be flexible enough? Will I be able to keep up?What should I bring?
At Trainor Movement Co., we want your first class to feel approachable, empowering, and maybe even a little fun. We are going to break it all down from Reasons to Start Pilates to How to Book Your First Session. This is the ultimate guide for Pilates for beginners.
Reasons to Start Pilates
We want everyone, from all walks of life, to experience Pilates for what it was truly meant to be: strength, balance, and mobility training. Most commonly, people want to start Pilates because they know their body needs the exercise, but they're not interested in joining a gym or going for a run. Another excellent reason to start Pilates is to gain strength with minimal impact on your joints. That, and the fact that Pilates focuses on alignment/posture, makes it the ideal exercise form for someone who has minimal previous exercise experience.
Small Movements, Intentional Exercise
Our focus is form, not perfection. Pilates has a way of making you discover muscles you didn’t even know you had. Instead of powering through dozens of fast reps, you’ll move slowly and with control, paying attention to how your body feels. Those tiny, mindful movements are surprisingly powerful. Don’t be shocked if you wake up the next day thinking, “Wow, I worked muscles I’ve never noticed before!”
Every session is a full body workout. Unlike a gym routine that separates "leg day" "arm day" and "back day", Pilates takes a global functional movement perspective, and has your whole body moving in just one session.
What to Wear and Bring
The best “uniform” for Pilates? Anything you can move and lie on your back comfortably in. Leggings, a fitted top, or shorts that won’t ride up. Try to avoid zippers and buttons. Grip socks are helpful but not essential, and we provide the mats and equipment. If you want to try grip socks but don't have any, we sell a variety of sizes and styles in studio. A water bottle and an open mind are really all you need.
What to Expect
Pilates isn’t just about core strength (though you’ll definitely feel that too). After just a few classes, many beginners notice improved posture, more ease in everyday movements, and a boost in body awareness. Over time, you’ll find strength, flexibility, and focus becoming part of your daily life, both in and out of the studio.
Where to Begin
The hardest part is often just showing up, and once you do, we’ll guide you the rest of the way. Our studio policy is that every client starts with a private session. Working one-on-one with an instructor at the beginning of your journey will give you some extra confidence before joining a group class. We also love to get to know each new client individually. This way we can see how you move, learn about your goals, and recommend the best group class for you. You’ll leave your first private session feeling accomplished, prepared, and maybe even a little taller.
